Second seed Lindsay Davenport progressed to the fourth round of the US Open with a 6-3 6-2 rout of Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues despite a shaky performance at Flushing Meadows.
After having her opening serve broken and finding herself locked in a 3-3 tie in the first set, the American won seven consecutive games to take control.
However, the Wimbledon finalist was forced to overcome 24 errors against the frustrated Medina Garrigues, who seemed to lose focus after arguing a line call midway through the first set.
Davenport will now try to reach her ninth straight US Open quarter-final with a fourth-round match against 15th seed Nathalie Dechy, who advanced with a win over fellow Frenchwoman Tatiana Golovin.
Third seed Amelie Mauresmo topped off a busy day for the French with a 7-5 6-3 victory over Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany at the US Open on Saturday.
Mauresmo advanced to a fourth round match against Russian Elena Likhovtseva, who fought off three match points to eliminate 13th-seeded compatriot and 2004 French Open champion Anastasia Myskina 0-6 6-3 7-6.
Advancing with Mauresmo were 12th seed Mary Pierce and 15th seed Nathalie Dechy, who prevailed 7-5 2-6 6-2 against compatriot Tatiana Golovin to set up a fourth round clash with second seed Davenport.
Pierce, the former Australian and French Open champion, was leading 6-3 3-0 when Serbian opponent Jelena Jankovic retired with a back injury.
The 30-year-old will next face seventh-seeded Justine Henin-Hardenne of Belgium in a repeat of this year's French Open final when she was beaten heavily.
