Justine Henin-Hardenne's dreams of winning the only Grand Slam title missing from her collection suffered a heartbreaking end when she was knocked out of Wimbledon 7-6 (10/8) 2-6 7-5 by Greece's Eleni Daniilidou.
The seventh seeded Belgian had arrived at the All England Club on a high after winning a second French Open crown in Paris two weeks ago but the 73rd ranked Daniilidou played a composed, well-executed match to secure a famous win.
She now faces America's Laura Granville for a place in the third round.
The 22-year-old Greek girl, who reached the fourth round here in 2001, the same year that Henin-Hardenne was runner-up to Venus Williams, kept her nerve when she wasted a match point in the 10th game of a tense deciding set.
But she claimed a famous win in the 12th game when 23-year-old Henin-Hardenne served up a ninth double fault of the tie.
Despite her second French Open title, the Belgian had arrived at the All England Club talking down her chances after missing nine months of action through injury and illness.
