Gloss taken off Federer victory

World number one Roger Federer admitted that the gloss had been taken off his victory over Carlos Moya today because his opponent was suffering from a shoulder injury.

Federer breezed to a 6-1 6-4 6-3 victory in under two hours to secure his place in the last eight at Roland Garros.

However, the 23-year-old Swiss ace, winner of all Grand Slams in 2004 except the French, was not given much of a challenge by the Spanish 14th seed, who called up the trainer to treat his right shoulder throughout the match.

"This win was not that fantastic because Carlos was injured,  said Federer.

"And with the problem on his shoulder he let me play on my serve."

This is the second time Federer has reached the quarter-finals on the French red clay after losing at the last eight stage in 2001 at the hands of Spain's Alex Corretja in straight sets.

But this time he has not lost a single set so far.

Next up for Federer is unseeded Romanian Victor Hanescu, who provided the shock result of the day by overcoming 10th seed and last year's semi-finalist David Nalbandian of Argentina after a five-set marathon, 6-3 4-6 5-7 6-1 6-2.
