Navratilova return ends in defeat

Martina Navratilova's return to singles action after 10 years ended in defeat
at the French Open this afternoon when she was hammered 6-1 6-3 by Gisela
Duklo, an Argentinian 28 years her junior.

Navratilova lacked the pace and energy to keep up with her young opponent, and while her previous form may have wilted with age, her propensity to cause controversy hasn't.

The 47-year-old walked onto court wearing headwear with a Nike logo on it. When informed that this breached tour rules Navratilova refused to change her headwear, instead she requested a pair of scissors from the umpire and proceeded to cut off the logo.

Earlier the two Williams sisters graduated to the second round of the competition without much fuss. Both sisters won their matches in straight sets. Venus saw off Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-2 6-4, while younger sister Serena swept past the Czech Republic's Iveta Benesova 6-2 6-2.

France's mary Pierce had a stunning first set against Luxembourg's Claudine Schaul, but was in trouble in the second before Schaul got injured. Pierce ran out an easy winner in the end 6-2 6-3.
