French women win Fed Cup

Amelie Mauresmo guided France to their second Fed Cup title with a straight sets win over American Meghann Shaughnessy (6-2, 6-1) which gave the French an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the best-of-five final in Moscow.

French number one Mauresmo and team-mate Mary Pierce had given France a 2-0 overnight lead by beating Lisa Raymond 6-4, 6-3, and Shaughnessy 6-3, 3-6, 8-6 respectively.

The US team, without their top players including Venus and Serena Williams, had been bidding for an 18th Fed Cup title, and included veteran Martina Navratilova in their line-up.

The 47-year-old, who first played Fed Cup for Czechoslovakia in 1975, remains unbeaten in 38 games and was due to line out later today in the doubles.
