Ireland have defeated Egypt 4-1 in their Davis Cup tennis match. Ireland had a 2-1 advantage going into Sunday's action. In Friday's matches, at Fitzwilliam Tennis Club, Irish Indoor Champion Stephen Nugent lost the opening rubber, going down in four sets to Egypt's Number 1, Mohammed Maamoun. But Davis Cup veteran John Doran came out of retirement to square the match, winning a tight four-set battle with Egypt's second singles player, Amro Ghoneim.
Doran then combined with doubles specialist David Mullins to win Saturday's doubles match against the highly-ranked Maamoun cousins, Mohammed and Karim, in straight sets.
The Irish won both singles encounters on Sunday as John Doran saw off Mohamed Maamoun 7-6, 6-3, 7-5 and then Sean Cooper accounted for Karim Maamoun 6-3 3-6 6-2 to take the tie 4-1. Next up for Ireland is a meeting with Greece in the summer.
