Australian Davis Cup captain Wally Masur has lashed out at British tennis star Greg Rusedski for dropping out of the tie between the two countries in February. Masur can't believe Rusedski has decided to pull out of the Davis Cup campaign despite confirming his participation in the Doha Open and the Australian Open next month.
Rusedski explained on announcing his decision that he did not want to commit himself when there was a chance his foot injury may not have recovered sufficiently and therefore he could be force to pull out at a late stage, thus hampering Britain's chances. However, it is believed Australia's decision to play the tie on clay courts played a major part in Rusedski's decision.
"Davis Cup is part of Australian sporting tradition and heritage and our guys spill blood to get a team spot," Masur told the Sydney Daily Telegraph. "I would expect our opponents Great Britain to do likewise. The best teams provide the best tennis and I think the cup deserves that type of commitment from the top players, especially for the fans. If we are playing Great Britain, the purist part of me wants their best team on the court for the sake of the competition."
