Martina Hingis will return to action next week after two-and-a-half months on the sidelines following ankle surgery. The former world number one from Switzerland has been entered into the Rogers AT&T Canada Cup, which is scheduled to begin on August 12, and the Pilot Pen Tennis event the following week. Hingis has also requested a wild card entry into the US Open, the year's final Grand Slam event.
The 21-year-old had surgery on May 20 to repair one torn ligament and three loose ligaments in her left ankle and was expected to be sidelined for about four months. However, she has made a smoother and more rapid return from surgery than anticipated.
The 1997 US Open champion and five-time Grand Slam winner has missed all of the majors in 2002. Hingis won titles in two of her first three appearances this year, increasing her career total to 40.
