Serena beats Mauresmo to reach final

American second seed Serena Williams defeated French ninth seed Amelie Mauresmo 6-2 6-1 in 55 minutes to book her place in the Wimbledon women's final for the first time. Serena, who is assured the world number one spot next week after her semi-final win, meets older sister Venus the top seed and two-time defending champion in Saturday's final.

Williams continued her assault into the second set as she broke the Mauresmo serve immediately. But she suffered an uncharacteristic blip in the following game and needed to save four break points before holding onto her own serve for a 2-0 lead. Williams continued to play virtually faultless tennis with Mauresmo caught in two minds about whether to come into the net.

When she took advantage of her eighth break point in the fifth game to go a double break up it was all over, and she closed out the match in style for a clinical 6-2 6-1 victory.
