Andre Agassi powered into the second round of Wimbledon after defeating Israel's Harel Levy 6-0, 6-4, 6-4 in the opening match on Centre Court. The American had the honour of opening on Centre Court after defending champion Goran Ivanisevic was absence through injury.
The third seed served a warning to the major players that he will be a serious contender this time. It was a struggle for Levy, whose best efforts were nowhere near enough to trouble the former champion. Agassi dropped his serve just once, in the final set as he tried to clinch the match. But he was devastating, recording a high percentage of aces, not usually seen as one his strengths.
"I felt very comfortable. You can only expect so much in your first match and the final score should probably have been closer. The first point on grass is always important. If you can control that it is hard for you opponent to turn it around. I got a bit streaky with my first serve but I can't count on that. I am not a serve and volley player. If I am going to win matches on grass I have to approach things in a different way", said Agassi.
Andre Agassi beat Harel Levy - 6-0, 6-4, 6-4.
