Local lad Richard Gasquet lived up to all expectations when he won the French Open junior title in Paris. The 16-year-old Gasquat, who became the youngest player to win a match Masters Series tournament with victory over Franco Squillari in Monte Carlo in April, crushed compatriot Laurent Recouderc 6-0, 6-1.
Gasquet had received a wildcard to play in the men's draw at Roland Garros and managed to take a set off Spaniard Albert Costa before losing 3-6, 6-0, 6-4, 6-3. Costa went on to reach the final against compatriot Juan Carlos Ferrero. In the girl's Roland Garros final, top seeded Indonesian Angelique Widjaja beat American Ashley Harkleroad 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
