Goran Ivanisevic became the latest casualty at the Australian Open as the big-hitting Croatian fell to France's world number 45 Jerome Golmard in Melbourne. The Wimbledon champion joined the likes of Lleyton Hewitt, Gustavo Kuerten and Sebastien Grosjean on the exit trail as Golmard broke midway through the fourth set and kept his nerve to knock out Ivanisevic 6-3 7-6 5-7 6-4, despite the Croatian serving 30 aces.
Earlier, Yevgeny Kafelnikov fell to a straight sets defeat to surprise American qualifier Alex Kimi in Melbourne this morning. The 27-year-old Russian crashed 6-3 7-5 6-3 to Kim, ranked only 234th in the world and playing only his second Grand Slam event.
Kafelnikov, winner in 1999 and runner-up two years ago, joins defending champion Andre Agassi who pulled out before the tournament started while the rest of the top-ranked quintet; Hewitt, Kuerten and Grosjean, were eliminated in the first three rounds.
