Davenport to miss Australian Open

World number one Lindsay Davenport will miss the Australian Open in Melbourne later this month because of a knee injury. The American failed to shake off the problem she picked up in Munich towards the end of last season during a semi-final clash with Belgian Kim Clijsters at the Sanex Championships.

Davenport had hoped a period of rest would be enough to enable her participation in the new season's first Grand Slam event but after pulling out of this week's Adidas International in Sydney, she has confirmed she will not be taking part in Melbourne. Further tests will be carried out on the problem to examine whether or not she should undergo surgery.
