Pat Rafter has hinted that he might make an early comeback from an extended break from tennis if Australia loses this week's Davis Cup final against France. The 28-year-old intends to enjoy a long lay-off from the game after the final which takes place over the weekend of November 30 to December 2 but revealed today that he may reconsider that decision if Australia are defeated.
"There probably couldn't be a more fitting ending if I could win this one," he reasoned. "If it wasn't meant to be then I would like to come back because the Davis Cup is a great event, it's a lot of fun. I'm never going to officially retire in case I ever want to come back," he added.
The two-time US Open champion and former world number one also revealed that he wants to remain involved in the Davis Cup competition in the future, even if it is not as a player. "Davis Cup has been a big part of my life," he explained. "I'm very, very passionate about it and it's very hard to foresee me not doing anything involved with tennis."
Rafter is expected to play in the event next weekend after an injury to his right arm responded to treatment.
