Sebastien Grosjean ended Pat Rafter's Masters Cup hopes with a comprehensive 7-6, 6-3 victory in a round robin match today. This second successive defeat for Wimbledon finalist Rafter ended his hopes of reaching the semi finals at the season-ending tournament. The Australian lost to Andre Agassi on Monday.
US Open champion Lleyton Hewitt booked his place in the semis when he beat Agassi 6-3 6-4 earlier to close the gap on world number one Gustavo Kuerten in the Champions Race to just eight points. It is his second career win against Agassi out of four meetings. The victory is worth 20 points in the Champions Race.
Hewitt had already defeated Frenchman Grosjean in the opening match of the tournament. Grosjean will play Agassi tomorrow to decide which player takes the second semi final spot from the group. Hewitt's next opponent will be compatriot Rafter, whose failure to qualify makes this a meaningless match.
