Ivanisevic called up for military service

Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic has been drafted for six month's military service but will be able to continue his professional career. The tennis star received his call-up on his 30th birthday yesterday, as it is the legal deadline for completing the regular conscript service. For normal civilians, the deadline is 27 years of age but top sportsmen are given three more years before they are drafted. Even then, they are only brought in to what is called a "sports squad", serving under a special regime that allows them to practice and continue professional careers.

Ivanisevic is scheduled to start his service in November and finish in May, at least one month ahead of Wimbledon where he will hope to enjoy a successful defence of his title. Ivanisevic has not been playing recently because of an injured foot but will line out in a Davis Cup world group qualifying round against Italy on September 21.
