Fourth seed Serena Williams reeled off the last three games for a 6-1 6-7 (7/9) 6-3 triumph over top-seeded Jennifer Capriati to win the Rogers AT&T Cup in Toronto. Williams lost to the top-ranked Martina Hingis in the final here a year ago after retiring in the third set with a foot injury.
A satisfied Williams insisted afterwards: "This win is really gratifying for me. To come through as a winner this year is really satisfying. I really needed the win." Capriati paid a tribute to the victor, admitting: "I think Serena played really well. She came up with a few big ones at important times. I felt pressure to hold my serve. She was also returning well. Probably the difference was her serve game."
Williams claimed her second title of the year just a week before the start of the US Open, which she won in 1999.
