Former Wimbledon champion Lindsay Davenport continued her quest to win back the ladies title by easing into the fourth round after a straight sets victory over Switzerland's Patty Schnyder. The third seed was 4-0 up within the first quarter-hour of the match as Schnyder struggled with her serve. The Swiss player did manage to win two service games but Davenport finished off the first set with an ace to take it 6-2.
In the second set, the American went up 4-1 before Schynder managed to pull it back to 4-3. However, Davenport's sudden dip was fleeting and she won the next two games to secure the second set and with it a place in the fourth round over 14th seed Jelena Dokic. The 18-year-old Yugoslavian reached the last 16 for the third successive year after a 6-3 7-5 victory over Barbara Schett.
Davenport has suffered with a knee injury recently but her victory at Eastbourne before Wimbledon got underway and her impressive displays so far at the All-England club would suggest the American is over that problem. "I haven't felt like it slowed me down at all," she said. "I feel like I am moving fine," she said after today's match.
Regarding her up-coming clash with the young Dokic, Davenport is confident. "It is going to be a tough match but certainly not fearful. I have a good record against big hitters," she said.
