Venus Williams out-slugged her younger sister in straight sets at Wimbledon this afternoon to book her place in the women's singles final. Venus took advantage of 18-year-old Serena's uncharacteristically erratic play on her maiden Centre Court appearance to win 6-4 7-6.
Serena had started as favourite after breezing into the last four without dropping a set. But after losing no less than six chances to go up a double break in the second set, Serena ended the match when she double-faulted into the net and she left the court in tears.
Venus will play the defending Champion and Number 2 seed, Laura Davenport in the final on Saturday. Davenport hardly broke sweat as she dismissed the challenge of the newly turned Australian Jelena Dokic with relative ease and in straight sets 6-4 6-2. Dokic played well but could'nt withstand the onslaught of the big hitting American, and so it sets up a challenge in the Final which will be a battle of the sluggers.
