Ben Johnson is the youngest member of the hockey squad and will turn 24 during the Games. Johnson hails from County Waterford and plays for club side Three Rock Rovers. He made his debut in 2017 and received man of the match in the side's landmark victory of Belgium in the FIH pro League in May.
Johnson has had two knee operations in the last three years. He didn't make the squad for Ireland’s Olympic qualifying tournament in Valencia in January but, after getting a late call-up as an injury replacement turned out to be top-scorer. One of his three goals came in the thriller against Korea which clinched the spot in Paris.
The team clinched qualification in Valencia in January this year when they defeated Korea 4-3 in their final match. The hockey squad narrowly missed out on a spot in Tokyo and were last in action at the Games in Rio 2016, where they had one win over Canada and finished 10th overall.
