The Knocklyon native is one of two remaining from the original squad from Rio, where he scored three goals to help Ireland finish 10th.

O'Donoghue scored the crucial fourth goal against Korea in Valencia in January that ultimately sealed qualification for his second Olympic Games. O'Donoghue has played for the Glenanne club for the majority of his career, with two stints at Belgian club KHC Dragons also under his belt, where in 2015 he was nominated for FIH young player of the year.

O'Donoghue has a sports science degree and a Masters in performance psychology and works in employee engagement for RSA Insurance and 123.ie.

Ireland clinched qualification in Valencia in January when they defeated Korea 4-3 in their final match. The hockey squad narrowly missed out on a spot in Tokyo and were last in action at the Games in Rio 2016, where they had one win over Canada and finished 10th overall.
