Luke McCann was agonisingly close to the 3:33.50 automatic Olympic standard at the Stockholm Diamond League in June, running 3:33.66.
The Dubliner had to wait until the close of the qualification window at the end of June to see if his mark was enough. It was, and the 26-year-old will be competing in round one of the men's 1500m on 2 August.
McCann had a successful season last year making the European indoor final and World Championships but sustained an injury that saw him side-ined for part of the winter months. To gain qualification for the Olympics he had to race seven times, in the same number of countries, in five weeks to gain enough ranking points. He has come back in good form from his injury-ridden winter and is now ranked fourth on the Irish all-time list for the 1500m.
McCann is joined on the athletics team by his sister Jodie, who will contest the 5000m in the Stade de France in August.
