Sophie O'Sullivan is following in her mother Sonia's footsteps qualifying for her first Olympics at 22-years-old, while her mum ran in her first Olympics aged 23.
O'Sullivan has been based at the University of Washington on a scholarship since 2020. She ran the automatic Olympic qualifying time in the heats of last year's World Championships in Budapest. More impressive, this came after a full collegiate season and running the European under-23 championships where she beat team-mate Sarah Healy to the gold.
In early 2024 O'Sullivan had not been in the form of last year, with her best being 4.08.04 from the semi-finals of the NCAA finals in June. O'Sullivan improved her 800m mark to an impressive 2:00.28 at the start of July which puts her fourth on the Irish all-time list and bodes well for her Olympic exploits the following month.
