Name: Stacey Flood
Event: Rugby sevens
Age: 27 (birthday 5 August)
Stacey Flood began her sporting life playing football for Clanna Gael Fontenoy and the county squad up to minor level, before making the full commitment to rugby. Flood was contacted to the sevens squad in 2015, just over one year after taking up the sport. She made her international debut in 2015 and has played at every stage of the World Seven Series. Flood was one of seven from the sevens squad called up to the XVs squad for the Six Nations in 2021 and made three appearances over the tournament.
Flood is one of the 'OGs' who have driven this team to make Olympic history for Ireland, whom the younger team-mates affectionately call the ‘Crusty Dustys’. Flood has racked up 217 games and 228 points on the World Series, including her 50th try last December, and she also has 10 Six Nations caps at fly-half. She juggles rugby with working in a financial solutions company.
The team qualified in May 2023 with a 10-5 win over Fiji in the fifth-place semi-final of the World Rugby Sevens Series. Qualifying for an Olympics has been a long fought battle for the women's side, narrowly missing out on qualification in the last two Olympic cycles.
The sevens side won their first world tournament at the SVNS Series Cup in Perth in January of this year which bodes well for momentum going into the Olympic Games.
