John Shortt set a second Irish record at the Giant Open in Paris this weekend, lowering Shane Ryan’s mark of 53.73 seconds in the 100m backstroke to earn a silver medal.

Shortt, who set a new standard of 1:56.07 in the 200m backstroke on Saturday, hit the wall in 53.37 in the shorter event.

The 19-year-old had a previous best of 53.80 from the semi-finals at the World Junior Championships last August, where the Galway man went on to win gold.

Also in action in Paris, Ellen Walshe claimed her third silver medal of the weekend, clocking 2:10.97 in the 200m individual medley.

Ellie McCartney was fourth in the same final in 2:12.60, while Jack Cassin was seventh in the 100m butterfly in 53.32.
