Dearbhaile Brady has won freestyle bronze at the World Para Swimming Championships in Singapore.

The 18-year-old from Feeny in County Derry held off Brazil's Mayara do Amaral Petzold to take third in the 50m S6 decider in a personal best time of 34.69 seconds.

The race was won by Ukrainian world-record holder Anna Hontar in 32.79, just .04 of a second ahead of China's Yuyan Jiang.

It is a first world medal for Brady, who was fifth in the 200m individual medley final on Tuesday, and the fourth of the championships for Ireland after Róisín Ní Riain added a second silver yesterday to go with her opening-day bronze.

"I'm without words right now," Brady told Paralympics Ireland.

"I'm so shocked. I need to look back and watch it but it felt really good. I'm really happy with that race."

Limavady club swimmer Brady made her World Championships debut in Manchester in 2023, followed by the Para Swimming European Championships in Madeira 2024 where she also won a bronze medal in the S6 50m Freestyle. She made her Paralympic debut last summer at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

Brady is back in the pool competing in the SB6 100m breaststroke tomorrow, another direct final.

Ní Riain also returns to the pool for the S13 400m freestyle and Barry McClements is in action in the S9 100m backstroke.
