A day after claiming gold in the 100m backstroke at the World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships, John Shortt was back in the pool in the 50m backstroke, where he advanced to the final.

The 18-year-old finished third in his heat on Thursday morning, in a time of 25.60, which left him seventh overall and safely through to the semis.

The Galway native then secured a second final spot of the championships, finishing fifth in his semi-final in the afternoon session.

Shortt qualified for Friday's final, again in seventh place overall, by touching in 25.36.

Shortt is the only Irish swimmer at the championships in Otopeni, Romania, and he will also complete in the 200m backstroke, with heats on Sunday morning and the final taking place in the afternoon.

On Wednesday, he clocked 53.86, just 0.13 outside Shane Ryan's Irish record to take gold in the 100m backstroke.
