Ellie McCartney finished seventh in the final of the women's 200m breaststroke at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore in a race dominated by Kate Douglass of the United States.
McCartney berthed in lane seven, clocked two minutes 25.22 seconds, while Douglass grabbed gold after hitting the wall in a US and championships record of 2:18.50, which is the second fastest time in history.
World record holder Evgeniia Chikunova, a neutral athlete from Russia, was second and Kaylene Corbett of South Africa was third.
McCartney, who swims at National Centre Limerick, came into the meet ranked 18th in the world and will take huge confidence from making the final on her championship debut.
Speaking after the final, the Enniskillen woman said: "It's an incredible experience, I didn't have high expectations coming into the final.
"At the start of this year, all I wanted to do was qualify for the world champs. So constantly this year, as the season progressed, we had to keep on moving that target, and I never thought it would be a final, but we're here now. I have now swum a world long course final, it's something not many people have done."
Tom Fannon finished seventh in the 50m freestyle semi-finals in 21.81.
In the 100m butterfly, Jack Cassin continued his good form with a personal best of 52.84 to finish second in his heat.
However, that placed him 34th overall, meaning the National Centre Limerick swimmer missed out on a place in the semi-finals.
Ireland's first relay of the week, comprised of four National Centre Limerick swimmers, all made their senior international debuts in the event.
The 200m freestyle semi-finalist Evan Bailey, Cormac Rynn, Cassin and 200m backstroke semi-finalist John Shortt combined for a time of 7:16.70 in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay to finish seventh in their heat and 14th overall.
