Eoin Corby secured a silver medal in the 200m breaststroke at the European U23 Swimming Championships in Slovakia on Friday evening, while compatriot and National Centre Limerick team-mate Ellie McCartney bagged a bronze in the 100m breaststroke to add to her gold in the 200m individual medley.
Corby was impressive in his execution of the race, going from seventh after 50 metres to sixth after 100 metres, and moving into third after 150m and finishing strongly to clock two minutes 10.50 seconds in second to equal his personal best from 2021.
Gold went the way of Austria’s Luka Mladenovic in 2:10.08, with Ukraine’s Maksym Ovchinnikiv taking bronze.
Speaking after the race, Corby said: "Obviously, I’m delighted with that race, I knew after this morning I had a bit more in me. I’d a quick finish and I just kind of tried to build on that this evening.
"I know a lot of the guys in the race, I know how they race, they know how I race, so it's just about playing to your advantages and your strengths putting the race together this evening, so I’m very very happy with it."
McCartney registered a time of 1:07.58 in the 100m breaststroke as Estonia's Enelia Jefimova landed top honours in 1:06.30, with Lithuania's Kotryna Teterevkova collecting silver.
"I’m quite happy with that swim, it’s nice to get my hands on the wall again and get another medal," McCartney said afterwards.
Meanwhile, Ellen Walshe was an emphatic winner of the 400m individual medley at the Settecolli Trophy in Rome in 4:37.80.
