Ellen Walshe has broken the longest-standing Irish swimming record after cruising to victory in the long course 200m Butterfly at the Leinster Aspiring Champions Meet in Dublin on Saturday.

The Templeogue recorded a time of 2:08.42 in the 50m pool to shatter the 1996 mark set by Michelle Smith of 2:09.91.

The two-time Olympian had last swam the event at the Tokyo Olympic Trials in 2021 with a time of 2:17.32 and had a previous personal best of 2:14.15 set in January 2020.

Walshe, who reached her first Olympic final in the women's 400m individual medley at Paris 2024, now holds four Irish senior long course records and five Irish short course ones.
