Shane Ryan has finished tenth overall in the 100m freestyle semi-finals at the World Aquatics Swimming Championships in Budapest.
Swimming in the first semi, Ryan finished fourth as he clocked 46.24, just one hundredth of a second off the 46.23 Irish record he set this morning.
A faster second semi-final saw the first five swimmers under the 46-second mark, leaving room for only two swimmers from Ryan's semi to progress to Thursday’s final.
"It was a great swim, basically the same time, just .01 slower," he said afterwards. "I definitely swam it a little bit different tonight, but it's just a lack of racing this year in the 100 free.
"The last time I did 100 free was long course (50m) at the Olympic Games and the first one was this morning, so look we changed it and I think we capitalised on it a bit more.
"I mean this Worlds is I think one of the fastest Worlds ever. I think on the first day there was seven world records broken and probably a lot more to come, so it is a quick Worlds, and I need to rest up now and get ready for the 50m backstroke tomorrow."
Earlier, contesting the 11th and final of the morning heats, Ryan touched the wall in 46.23 seconds to finish third behind Maxime Grousset of France and Egor Kornev of Russia, with the latter competing as a neutral athlete.
Ryan's previous Irish record was a time of 46.68, which he set at the Irish Championships five years ago.
Danielle Hill, Niamh Coyne and Eoin Corby also provided Irish interest in the pool this morning, but all three swimmers failed to advance from their respective heats.
Hill clocked 53.66 to finish eighth in her heat of the 100m freestyle, Coyne was ninth in her 100m breaststroke heat in 1:07.40, with Corby clocking 58.63 in ninth in his 100m breaststroke heat.
