Ellen Walshe finished seventh in a stacked 200m individual medley semi-final field, missing out on a place in tomorrow night's final.

The Templeogue swimmer clocked a time of 2:11.35 in the second semi-final, meaning she placed 13th overall across the two races.

Competing in her race was Tokyo silver medallist Alex Walsh from the US and Canadian superstar Summer McIntosh, who has already won three medals at this Games.

Walsh won the race with a time of 2:07.45, followed by McIntosh (2:08.30) and her US teammate Kate Douglass (2:08.59).

Speaking after her race, the 22-year-old Irishwoman said she was happy to improve on her time of 2:11.81 from this morning's heat, but admitted that she probably would have needed to beat her personal best (2:10.92) to advance.

"It's nice to go out there and swim a better race," she said. "I was probably hoping for a little more tonight but it wasn't quite there.

"It really does come down to a touch, everybody races it so differently.

"It was always going to be a tough one to get back in and I think I probably would have needed a PB to be in the top eight.

Walshe will be back in action tomorrow in the 4x100m medley relay.
