Mona McSharry produced a highly assured performance to book her place in the final of the 100m breaststroke at the World Aquatics Championships in Doha on Monday evening.

McSharry advanced with the second fastest time after clocking 1:06.11, which is just outside her Irish record of 1:05.55.

The Sligo 23-year-old, who has already booked her ticket to the Paris Olympics, had earlier made it to the semis by coming second in her heat in 1:06.49.

She will now look to improve on the fifth-placed finish she achieved at the 2023 edition of the World Championships. Her final takes place at 5.45pm on Tuesday.

"I'm really happy with that swim," she told RTÉ Sport. "It's given me a great place in the final, middle lane, have a race and see what happens.

"I'll try to keep pretty calm but I'm also excited for the potential that could happen. It's anyone's race really... we all have a shot, and it's going to be a lot of fun."

Conor Ferguson failed to make it out of his 100m backstroke semi, his time of 53.90 leaving him 13th overall.

He dipped under the 54-second mark for the first time in his career with a personal best swim of 53.95 in the heats.

However the 24-year-old reached the end of the road in the semi-finals, where an Olympic qualification time of 53.74 was on offer.
