Daniel Wiffen has qualified for the final of the 800m freestyle final at the FINA World Aquatics Championships in Budapest.
Going in heat three, which would provide the three fastest qualifiers, Wiffen produced a new Irish record time of 7:46.32, knocking four seconds off his own previous record. He came in behind Mykhailo Romanchuk (Ukraine), Florian Wellbrock (Germany) and Gabriele Detti (Italy).
It was good enough for fourth place but the Armagh twin faced a nervous wait to see if it would be good enough for a spot in tomorrow's final. It was, as he ultimately qualifed as the fifth fastest overall. It put him one-hundredth of a second faster than reigning Olympic champion Bobby Finke of the USA.
Wiffen will be back in the pool going for a medal tomorrow afternoon at 4.02pm, Irish time.
