Nicole Turner bags brilliant silver in IPC Europeans

Nicole Turner produced another stunning swim to bag silver in the Women's 200m Individual Medley IPC European Open Swim Championships in Madeira, Portugal.

The 13-year-old Laois native swam a phenomenal six-second PB time of 3.18.79 to safely book her spot in the final, and then delivered an even better performance of  3.14.41 to take second in the decider.

Speaking afterwards she said: “It feels amazing. To have a silver medal is great. I’m amazed, I thought I was fighting for bronze but silver is just amazing.”

Ellen Keane earlier clocked a new PM in the 100m backstroke S9 to finish is fourth in 1.16.09 but smashed that effort in a lung-busting performance that just failed to earn a medal.

Ailbhe Kelly also just missed out on the podium in the 400m freestyle S8 as she took fourth in 5.38.41.

Kelly had a brilliant first day which saw her PB and kept up her good form in Monday morning's heat when finishing in 5.39.51. However a medal eluded her despite another excellent swim.

Jonathan McGrath missed out on Rio qualification in the 400m freestyle S8  final after swimming in 4.54.56.

McGrath had finished his heat in a time of 4.53.50 to book his spot in the final.

“It [the time] wasn’t what I wanted unfortunately,” he said. “Coming into the swim I was hoping to qualify so I’m a bit disappointed but at the same time, I gave everything I had so there’s not much more I can do.”
