Conor Ferguson is getting closer to the Olympic standard

Conor Ferguson will be hoping to achieve the Olympic qualifying time in the men's 100 metres backstroke on day three of the National Swimming Championships at the NAC in Dublin.

The 16-year-old just missed out on a place at the Rio Games by five hundredths of a second en route to winning the men's individual 100 metre backstroke final yesterday in a time of 54.41 seconds, just outside the qualifying time of 54.36 seconds.

But Ferguson will get another shot at qualifying as he takes the leading leg in the Ireland 4x100m medley relay team with his time counting towards individual qualification.

Ferguson, alongside Alex Murphy, Jordan Sloan and Brendan Hyland will also look to post a time that could qualify the relay team for this summer's Games for the first time.

Murphy will also be looking to go under the Olympic qualifying time in the final of the 100 metres breaststroke this evening before concentrating on the medley relay.

There are just 16 places at the Games for relays. The top 12 countries from the World Championships in 2015 have already secured their places, with the fastest four teams outside of the 12 on 31 May claiming a spot for their country.

This will be one of two opportunities for the team to post a time, with the second coming at the upcoming European Championships.

Tonight's finals, which are off the blocks at 5.30pm, will also feature the men's and women's 100 metres freestyle deciders.
