Ireland have finished seventh in the womens 4 x 50 metres freestyle relay final at the European Short Course swimming championships in Istanbul.

The team came home in eigth place in a time of 1:42.52 - just outside the Irish record - but were awarded seventh place after Russia were disqualified for an early turn.

Aisling Cooney swam the fastest leg for Ireland, clocking an impressive 24.91 seconds.

The gold medal went to the Netherlands, who set the second world record of the night winning in a time of 1.33.25, 0.55secs inside their own world best, which they set in Croatia last year.

Sweden took the silver with Germany in bronze, while the other world record of the night went to Laszlo Cseh of Hungary.

The triple Olympic silver medallist, cut 2.06secs off his own world record with a time 3:57.27 in the 400 metre individual medley.

On Saturday, Irish swimmers in action are Aisling Cooney (50m backstroke), Michael Dawson (50m breaststroke), Grainne Murphy, Nuala Murphy and Niamh O’Sullivan (400m freestyle), Donal O’Neill (100m backstroke) and the Women’s 4x50m medley team relay.
