Irish swimmers fail to book Beijing places

The Irish Long Course Swimming Championships, which also doubled as an Olympic Trial, failed to produce any swimmers for the upcoming Beijing games, writes RTÉ Sport's John Kenny.

This is despite it being the fastest domestic meet ever with well over 20 Senior and junior records broken over the four days.

Hopes were high that Melanie Nocher would make it in her main event, the women's 200 metres Backstroke, but her time was over two seconds off the standard and she also surprisingly lost the final as Dubliner Aishling Cooney beat her to the gold.

To make matters worse, Cooney, winner of the 100 Backstroke on Saturday, also took Nocher's Irish record winning in a very fast 2:13.86 seconds.

Despite the disapointment, there is one more opportunity for Irish swimmers to qualify for China.

Nocher, Cooney and Dubliner Barry Murphy will be part of an Irish squad who will now travel to the Dutch nationals in Eindhoven for one last attempt to get to Beijing.

Karl Burdis of Portmarnock broke the 12-year-old Irish 100 metres Backstroke record not once but twice.

He lowered the old time by .63 of a second in the heats and cut a further seven hundredths of a second off the time when taking gold in the final.

Stephen McQuillan of Ards set a new Irish best in the 50 Fly of 25.11 seconds.
