Andrew Bree finished fifth in the men's 200 metres breast stroke final at the European Short Course Championships at Debrecen in Hungary.
Bree, who broke the Irish record to take third fastest qualifier after the heats this morning, turned second at the first 50 but gradually lost places over the next three legs.
And he ended up finishing fifth in a time of two minutes 8.23 seconds, which was three tenths of a second slower than his heat time this morning.
The gold medal went to Daniel Gyurta of Hungary with Paolo Bossini of Italy taking silver and Bulgaria's Mihail Alexandrov taking bronze.
