American Michael Phelps broke his second world record in as many days in Melbourne to clinch the 200 metres butterfly title at the FINA World Championships.

The 21-year-old lowered his own previous best to 1:52.09 - comprehensively beating nearest rival Wu Peng of China by around three seconds in the process.

On Tuesday, Phelps shaved 0.20secs off Ian Thorpe's six-year-old 200m freestyle world mark.

Phelps' fellow American Leila Vaziri also set a new world best on Wednesday, clocking 28.16secs in the 50m backstroke semi-final.

Frenchwoman Laure Manaudou was another to get in on the act, smashing the 200m freestyle mark by nearly a second to 1:55.52 to erase from the record books the efforts of Italian Federica Pellegrini just 24 hours earlier.
