Michael Phelps, winner of six gold medals and two bronze at the Olympic Games at Athens, was sentenced to an eighteen months suspended sentence after pleading guilty to drink-driving today.
Because it is a suspended sentence, Phelps' record will be expunged if he complies with the terms of the sentence.
He has been ordered to attend meetings sponsored by an anti-drunk driving organisation in the USA and give anti-drunk driving speeches to students.
Phelps was charged with driving while impaired, violation of a licence restriction and failure to obey a stop sign on 4 November of this year.
