Records fall at the National Aquatic Centre

Andrew Bree was amongst the record breakers on the third day of competition at the National Aquatic Centre in Abbotstown this afternoon. 23-year-old Bree swam the 50 metres this morning in a new Irish record time of 27.91 to qualify for the final. However he finished 12th in the final with a time of 27.94. Oleg Lisogoro of the Ukraine won in a time of 26.89 while Remo Lietolf from Switzerland was second in a time of 27.02 with Germany's Mark Warnecke third.

A new European record was set in the long distance 1,500m Freestyle when Russian swimmer Yuri Prilukov took the title in a time of 14.31.82. Sarah Poewe from Germany recorded a new Championship record with a 1.06.43, but only lasted until the afternoon semi- finals, when she reduced it to a 1.06.38. But not as fast as the Russian girl Elena Bogonazova who went 1.06.04 to be the fastest qualifer into the final. Then it was the turn of French swimmer Franck Esposito in the Men's 200m Butterfly to add another record, when he secured gold with a time of 1.51.98.

Two more Irish records were set when Steven Manley recorded a time of 56.79 in the 100m Individual Medley and the Women's relay team of Lee Kelleher, Emma Robinson, Julie Douglas and Chantal Gibney knocked 5 seconds off the existing record to establish a new time of 1.53.95.

Other Irish performances today included: Chantal Gibney 400m F/s, 4.14.17, 100m B'fly Lee Kelleher 1.01.35, personal best time, and Sinead Tyrell 1.04.16. Emma Robinson 100m Br/s, 1.09.92, 50m B/c Melanie Nocher 30.26 and Claire Hogan 30.15 both personal best performances. Steven Manley 100m IM Donal O'Neill and Muris O'Riada 200m B'fly
