Ian Thorpe produced another blistering finish to win the 100 metres freestyle title and collect his fifth gold medal of the Pan Pacific swimming championships today. The 19-year-old turned fourth, 0.30 seconds behind American Nate Dusing in lane seven, but stormed back over the second 50 metres to win in 48.84, a second outside the world record held by Dutchman Pieter van den Hoogenband.
Australian team mate Ashley Callus matched his personal best to take silver in 49.26 with Dusing settling for the bronze in 49.47. "I was aware that (Nate) would be out quick and I wanted to be out almost as quick. Usually it's an event that has been held by the Americans, so it's great to get a one-two in it tonight," said Thorpe.
The Sydneysider, whose only other major 100 metres title came at the Commonwealth Games this summer, will be aiming to match his six golds in Manchester in the 4x100 metres medley relay on the final day of competition on Thursday. Thorpe, who holds the world record in the 200, 400 and 800 metres freestyle, has complained of fatigue after a punishing schedule this year.
