Welsh defeats Thorpe in 100m backstroke

Australian Matt Welsh defeated Ian Thorpe in the 100m backstroke to end his fellow countryman's bid for a historic seven gold medals at the Commonwealth Games. The 19-year-old had been bidding to become only the second man to win seven golds at a major championships, equalling the feat of American Mark Spitz at the 1972 Olympics in Munich. But he had to settle for silver as Welsh powered to victory in 54minutes 72seconds – shattering the four-year-old Games record by well over half-a-second.
