Chantal Gibney, one of Ireland's brightest hopes at the World Swimming Championships in Japan, missed out on a place in the semi-finals of the 200m freestyle event by almost three seconds. Meanwhile, Emma Robinson was only 0.12 of a second outside a semi-final berth in the 50m breast-stroke.
Meanwhile, Holland's golden girl Inge de Bruijn roared to her second gold medal of the championships when she triumphed in the 50m butterfly having already captured the 100m freestyle title. De Bruijn won in a time of 25.97 seconds from the Swedish duo of Therese Alshammar (26.18) and Anna-Karin Kammerling (26.45).
