Russian swimmer Roman Sloudnov has finished first in the 100m breaststroke at the World Championships in Japan. The Olympic bronze medallist, who yesterday set a new world record in the event by finishing with a time of 59:94 seconds in the semi-finals, today forced Olympic gold medallist Domenico Fioravanti into second spot as the Russian triumphed in a time of one minute 0.16 seconds.
Although the 21-year-old student was only third at the 50-metre mark, behind American Ed Moses and British swimmer Darren Mew, he stormed into the lead on the second length to take first place. Fioravanti came in 0.31 seconds behind Sloudnov in second spot, while Olympic silver medallist, Moses, who held the world record until yesterday, finished third with a time of 1:00.16.
