Russian breaststroker Roman Sludnov has broken his own 100 metres world record at the World Swimming Championships in Japan today. Sludnov sliced 0.03 seconds off his previous best with a time of 59.94 seconds. Ireland's Michael Williamson was ranked 37th, finishing in 1minute 5.78 seconds.
Australia's Petria Thomas won the women's 200 metres butterfly final, while Matt Welsh took gold in the 100 backstroke to give Australia four golds in two days. The US had to be content with just one gold medal, won by Anthony Ervin in the men's 50 metres freestyle Meanwhile, Deirdre Hughes failed to qualify from the heats of the women's 50 metres backstroke.
