Leading Australian swimmer Lori Munz has made solid progress from injuries suffered in a car crash last week and may be back in the pool as early as next week, her doctor said today. Munz suffered a broken right kneecap, fractured left knee and chest injuries in the accident south of Sydney. The swimmer's doctor, Martin Jones, told reporters that Munz, who remains hospitalised, had already started walking again and could attempt pool exercises early next week.
Munz has been undergoing physiotherapy and strength training following surgery. Munz won two gold medals in the 4x100 metres and 4x200 metres freestyle relays at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur. She was considered a near-certainty to make the powerful Australian swimming team for the Sydney Olympics. The 21-year-old told reporters she was determined to be fit enough to compete in the selection trials for the Australian Olympic swimming team in May. "If I have a shot, I am going to give it everything I have," Munz said today.
