Swimming: European Short Course Championships

At the European Short Course Championships in Lisbon, Portugal, Emma Robinson finished 9th in the semi-finals of the 50 metre breast stroke, and set a new Irish Senior Record in 32.43 seconds. Andrew Reid finished 24th in the heats of the 100m Butterfly in 56.26 seconds while Hugh O'Connor finished 26th in the 50m backstroke in 27.20 seconds.

Elsewhere, Australian swimmer, Michael Kilm lowered his own world record for the 100 metres butterfly with a time of 52.03 seconds in Canberra. Just yesterday James Hickman, back in the Lisbon pool, set out on a similar mission to realise his ambition over the short course distance. The Leeds swimmer was keen on his chances of setting a new world best and raced home to qualify in 51.20secs - 0.45secs ahead of his nearest rival.

Hickman reckons he's capable of even better today, a day that has seen Sheffield's Zoe Baker claim Britain's first. Baker, now based in New Zealand, won the 50 metres breaststroke in her second British record time of the day as she touched in 31.40 seconds - 0.9secs ahead of principal rival Agnes Kovacs of Hungary.
