Joseph Anang will be part of Ghana's World Cup squad

Ghana have announced their World Cup squad with St Patrick's Athletic goalkeeper Joseph Anang included in the 26-man selection.

Coach Carlos Queiroz was forced to juggle last-minute injury concerns before finalising the group.

Queiroz held a press conference on Monday before Ghana’s friendly against Wales in Cardiff on Tuesday but did not name the squad as had been expected.

It was released just before FIFA's deadline.

Queiroz only took over as boss last month as Otto Addo departed following friendly defeats by Austria and Germany in March.

Anang has become a regular squad member for the Black Stars for a year and made his debut in November against Japan. He is likely to be third choice in the squad.

The former England youth international took a break from international duty to play for the Saints in their 1-0 loss to Shamrock Rovers last Friday.

The 25-year-old is established as one of the leading goalkeepers in Ireland and is approaching 100 matches for the Inchicore outfit, having joined from West Ham United.

He will miss at least three Premier Division games for Stephen Kenny's side. Number two Danny Rogers is likely to deputise. Pat’s are set to receive up to a six-figure sum in compensation from FIFA for the call-up.

Anang joins Roberto Lopes of Cape Verde in being called up to play at the tournament from the League of Ireland.

The veteran Portuguese coach Queiroz did confirm to reporters that centre back Alexander Djiku had been injured in training over the weekend and replaced by Dutch-born Derrick Luckassen.

Ghana had already been hit by the ‌absence of Mohammed Kudus after he failed to recover from a thigh injury in a major blow to the country's World Cup hopes.

The key midfielder's recovery in time for next week's start of the tournament in Canada, Mexico, and the United States had been a long shot after injury to ‌a quad muscle in January and subsequent surgery.

Mohammed Salisu also missed out after the Monaco centre back ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in a Ligue 1 clash in January.

But the ‌squad did see a return after a three-year absence for 31-year-old Baba Abdul ‌Rahman. The former Chelsea full-back was in the 2022 World Cup squad but has featured in only one international for Ghana since.

Former Arsenal footballer Thomas Partey, currently of Villarreal, has been included.

Partey has pleaded not guilty to seven charges of rape and one count of sexual assault relating to allegations by four different women between 2020 and 2022. He is due to stand trial next year and denies all charges.

The Black Stars face Panama on 17 June in Toronto in their opening Group L encounter before taking on England and Croatia.
